The main issue I've had with Project Space is this assignment. Normally, going outside is not a problem. However, the COVID-19 outbreak has changed our lives rapidly. So far, there are several articles that recommend walking outside while people practice social distancing. At the same time, there are contradicting reports about what is safe and what is high risk. For this reason, I am modifying this wandering assignment to a photoessay of your home with the census data of your community. Hello everyone, Let's talk about Micro-essay 1 coming up. This exercise is about practicing descriptive writing in preparation of the Project Space Autoethnography Narrative Essay. Here are the instructions:
Hello everyone,
Please watch this video, "Update for My Classes Moving Online," for a quick check-in. Now that CSUN is officially moving online for the spring semester, it is crucial now more than ever to establish a sense of stability and consistency in instruction. I will write another post with updates to our assignments and plan for the semester. Thank you for your patience. I am working as fast as I can during spring break to transition effectively. If I am successful, you'll find that our class is not only doable but even--dare I ask--enjoyable? I certainly hope so. Keep calm and wash your hands, Susana Hello students, Today we are going to practice exploring different spaces around us in preparation for your coming ethnographies. Review How to Be an Explorer of the World again. Today you will pick a spot on campus or nearby and you'll tweet your ethnographic notes. Remember to use all five senses: see, hear, smell, touch, and taste (if appropriate). Rules & Guidelines
WINNER: The person who guesses the most locations will win a prize. Good luck to all! Hello students, Here are some reminders for Project Text essays: Look at literary essay examples: The 2019 issue of La Ceiba: The Undergraduate Journal of Central American Studies features excellent examples of literary essays written by students. Some of these essays were written by my CAS113BOP students from spring 2019. Browse the Table of Contents and click on the various literary essays featured on the top of the page. Pay attention to detail: Review your title and aim for something specific. Avoid false starts: A false start is an introduction that begins too broadly. The hook of the paper should immediately introduce the topic of your paper. Avoid beginnings that are too generally referring to themes of the texts, such as immigration, relationships, love, etc. You can make these broader connections once you are deconstructing the text in the body paragraphs. Give a brief biography of the authors: In the introduction of a literature paper, you want to aim to give the reader some context on the author. Don't just introduce the name of the author and move on. Instead, provide the reader with some biographical information after you introduce the title of the book and the author. Of course, don't attempt to fit the author's entire biography in the introduction, but about two sentences explaining who they are will help the reader understand the texts as well. Hello students, Today, I'm talking about the Project Text micro-essays. The idea for each micro-essay is to practice literary analysis before you write the final essay. Each micro-essay is a chance to get better at writing about different texts. The micro-essay requirements are as follows:
Hello students, We are embarking on exciting times as we prepare to post the first blog posts of the season. I've compiled some notes and reminders that might be helpful. Refer back to the presentation on digital writing and the infographic with the website assignment details for notes. Hello students, We are two weeks post-spring break and time is flying by. We had a wet spring break this year with the continuous rain, but spring has finally arrived in full bloom. This coming week, we are going to prepare drafts for your autoethnographies while moving forward with Project Media. Here is what you need to know: Hello students, We are now getting ready to draft your literary analysis essays for Project Text. We are starting off with two handouts: Literary Essay Outline Skeleton and Literary Essay Examples Using The Naked Screen. Use the Literary Essay Outline Skeleton handout to memorize the outline. When we meet again, we are doing a group activity where you will collaborate to draft an essay. You will need to have the outline memorized. The winners will receive 10 pts extra credit. Note: this handout has an example at the bottom of what a body paragraph will look like using the outline for the body paragraphs. Hello students, We have two more weeks left for Project Text. Before you know it, your drafts will be due and we'll be moving on to Project Space (one of my favorite projects). In anticipation of your final papers for Project Text, make sure to check out the prompt. The file, The Tattooed Soldier Prompt, includes a rubric and proactive steps you can take to ensure you do your best. In the week leading up to the final essay, we will be doing lessons and exercises to help you understand the genre of literary analysis. Once you understand what the prompt requires, you'll choose a focused analysis of The Tattooed Soldier, by Hector Tobar. |
