Dear Portfolio Committee:
I would like to end this semester by writing this letter not only because it’s part of my grade, but because I’m also grateful for the class. I learned many writing techniques throughout the year. It was my first writing class in college and I enjoyed taking it with so many talented students. I made some great friends throughout the process who I will never forget.
Being in CAS113A/B has not only improved my writing but my confidence in knowing I have what it takes to write good papers. I never noticed different genres or what made those genres different until this class. The genre that I like best is the autoethnography. I realized it when I wrote about my dad. That narrative is a part of me that is never shared to anyone except for those who read it. The process of being able to write down my feelings towards everything my dad and family has gone through gave me an immediate relief. I had always wanted to let it out and talk to someone, but I do not want a person to show me pity or feel sorry for me because I don’t want to seem like someone who has gone through lots of pain. The simple fact that I can write it down without seeing people’s facial expressions makes me feel comfortable by relieving it off my chest.
What I have learned in my Central American studies class will always be very important in my life. I will be using all the tools and taking full advantage of the advice Professor Marcelo and the SI leaders have given me. At first, I was really nervous familiarizing myself to the new “College Life”. I am a very shy person in general whenever I am around people, especially when I need to talk in front of the class. You helped me open up and overcome my fear. I loved reading the different short stories you would assign the first few weeks of school. Your class gave me the desire to continue reading during my own time.
You have taught me how to become a better writer in many different ways. I learned how to use concrete language correctly and how to apply it within my essays. Throughout the year I have written rhetorical analysis, informational, persuasive, autoethnography, and collaborate projects. And eventhough I have written persuasive essays in the past, I had never written this genre in the proper way you have showed me.
In conclusion, you enabled me to become more interested in reading and writing because in reality, I do not like to read or write. Your class will serve me well in the future for my following classes as well as my future jobs. Thank you so much Professor Marcelo for everything you have showed me and for always believing in me to be a great writer.
Sincerely,
